Mountain Air

Mountain Air
A mile in the sky

OVERVIEW
Mountain Air is a stunning, private mountaintop golf community perched nearly a mile the sky in the North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains. Located just 30 minutes north of the storied and embracing city of Asheville, Mountain Air’s 100-mile views and impeccable amenities attract a national clientele, some of whom access the community through a private paved runway, the highest east of the Mississippi River.

Mountain Air is utterly defined by the focus it maintains in manifesting a sense of “community” for the largely second-home residents at the property. Not just through the Slickrock Village Green, the welcoming hearth of the community, but also through broad-reaching family recreation programs driven by an in-house naturalist and director of family recreation. And by the preservation of a 100-acre Old Growth Forest, complete with interactive/environmental educational programs. And by connecting neighborhoods with a vast network of nature trails, all of which provide family learning opportunities.

At 4,919 feet of elevation, Mountain Air boasts the highest tennis courts, swimming pool, clubhouse and paved runway for 1000 miles in any direction….and summer temperatures there rarely venture into the 80’s! Mountain Air’s championship golf-course is a singular 18 hole layout that drops an astounding 900 feet of elevation in just 11 holes, and routinely offers 50 to 100-mile views from tee boxes and greens sculpted from Slickrock Mountain’s granite contours. Golf journalists have called it among the most dynamic and visually compelling courses in the country.

Any account of the Mountain Air story must speak of the fortitude displayed by the Banks and Youngs, two local Burnsville families who have developed the 1,300 acre community. Their in-house capability has kept homesite and shelter prices at an affordability level usually unattainable through traditional development models. As of last fall, club members now own the $45 million worth of club assests- debt free!

The addition of nine new holes later this year will bring a total of 27 holes of championship golf to the development, complemented by state-of-the-art training and practice facilities.
  • Clubhouse: The elegant Mountain Air Clubhouse blends seamlessly into the high country landscape, built from native stone and wood and decorated throughout with furniture and crafts by local artisans. Tall windows make the mountain skyline an integral part of every room.

The development also features a network of community parks, plus ongoing activity programs for children.
  • Aircraft Runway: At 4,400 feet above sea level, Mountain Air’s spectacular 2,875-foot private runway promises an unforgettable arrival. A full-service pilot’s room offers complete flight planning conveniences.
  • Fishing: The Burnsville area offers excellent fishing for trout, bass and other species on nearby lakes, rivers and streams. Mountain Air’s resident naturalist will recommend favorite fishing holes and help residents arrange guided fishing excursions.
  • Swimming: A heated swimming pool and outdoor whirlpool are located adjacent to the spa and fitness center
  • Spa and Fitness Center: The Chautauqua Family Activity and Fitness Center houses a comprehensive selection of weight machines and exercise equipment, plus a full-service day spa, a game room and a media room with a large viewing screen and high-backed theater seating.
  • Community Lodge: Anchoring the Village Green, the Falling Leaf Members’ Lodge provides a comfortable gathering place for residents and club members, including a spacious great room with soaring vaulted ceilings, a massive stone fireplace and a wall of windows framing timeless mountain views. The facility also houses a golf shop, a community market, a library lounge and a cozy meeting parlor with its own porch.
  • Community Garden: Mountain Air’s organic garden provides fresh herbs and vegetables for the community’s restaurants, and gives residents the opportunity to create and maintain their own garden plots.
  • Dining and Shopping: On-site dining options range from casual deli fare to elegant dining in the Oak Room at the community clubhouse or Orville & Wilbur’s Bar & Grill located on the village green.
