The Thoms Estate

The Thoms Estate
European estate living in the heart of Asheville.

OVERVIEW
Over the centuries, Europeans have developed a philosophy of living envied the world over.
The French call it joie de vivre.

It used to be that you actually had to reside in Europe to experience this rather enlightened view of living. But no longer.

At The Thoms Estate, you’ll find homes and cottages nestled in small hamlets across a landscape populated by century-old trees, waterfalls and secret gardens. In this idyllic setting, joy bubbles up from the simplest of everyday pleasures: An afternoon spent perfecting your watercolor technique overlooking a wildflower meadow. Sharing a vintage pinot noir with friends. Or mapping the contours of the moon from a private star gazing observatory.

Established in 1941 by renowned preservationist Harold Thoms, one of Asheville’s visionaries, Mr. Thoms searched to find …

“... the right property – away from a crowded neighborhood – not on a main highway; rolling land – not too steep –with a good view of the mountains in the distance, plenty of room for horses, dogs, cats – not too far from town.” –Harold Thoms, 1939

Today, in cooperation with the Thoms family, this classic estate is being graciously restored to its original grandeur and design, with 250-year-old oaks dotting the landscape, expansive open spaces with meandering footpaths, fields of lavender and wildflowers, and the original Manor House. In keeping with Mr. Thoms’ vision, the Thoms Estate master plan calls for a total of 130 residences clustered in small, crescent-shaped hamlets, with abundant natural and formal gardens, private walking paths and atmospheric cobblestone lanes lit with gas lamps.

Here at The Thoms Estate,  joie de vivre is always near at hand -- Draped across 83 wooded, gently rolling acres and located improbably close to Asheville’s vibrant downtown, this private mountain community offers the best of both worlds: away-from-it-all natural splendor and a tempting proximity to Asheville's treasure of cultural and culinary offerings.
